Enlistment

Enlisted members make up most of the military workforce. They receive training in a job specialty and do most of the hands-on work. Usually, you'll sign up for four years of active duty and four years inactive. You can join as an enlisted member and attend officer training later on.

Steps for enlistment:

1. Talk to a recruiter

2. Set a date with recruiter to visit MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station)

3. Take ASVAB (Aptitude test)

4. Pass physical exam (medical exam)

5. Meet with counselor to determine a military career based on:

  - needs of service

  - job availability

  - ASVAB score

  - Physical requirements

  - recruit preference

6. Oath of enlistment

7. Must choose between:

  - Direct Ship: report to basic training shortly after completing MEPS

  - Delayed Entry Program: commit to basic training at a time in the future, generally within one year.

ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps)

The goal of the ROTC is to train college students for future service in branches of the U.S. military; the Army, Air Force, and Navy each have their own ROTC programs.

  • ROTC does offer college scholarships for students who commit to service in the military. This scholarship would cover most college expenses in return for participation in military training while in college and service after graduation.

  • Upon graduation from the Army ROTC program, students are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army and are required to serve 8 years. The rank doesn't only correspond to the level of responsibility but also correlate to pay grade.

  • Requirements for high school students (based on Army ROTC)

    • Be a U.S. Citizen

    • Be between 17-26 years old

    • Have a high school GPA of at least 2.5

    • Have a high school diploma

    • Score a minimum GPA of 1000 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT

    • Agree to accept commission and serve in the Army on active duty or in a Reserve component (Army Reserves or Army National Guard?

    • Meet physical standards

Military Academies

A military academy or service academy is an education institution which prepares candidates for service in the officer corps. It normally provides education in a military environment.

Basic requirements:

1. GPA & class rank (top 10% of class)

2. Must take challenging courses (AP, Dual Credit, Honors courses)

3. SAT of at least 1260-1300

4. ACT of at least 29-31

5. Must do well in math & science classes in high school because the military academies are STEM-heavy.

- computer and foreign language are also valuable

- must be a leader (sports team captain, club founder or officer, student body or class officer, editor of school newspaper, etc.) - They are looking for a few good quality examples, do not join 10 clubs that isn't very impressive.

6. Must be an athlete - must be physically fit. Some academies require cadets to participate in some sort of athletic activity, whether it's NCAA sport, club sport or intramural.

6. Must be nominated from:

    - U.S. Senator or U.S. Representative

     - U.S. Vice President
